How to accurately calculate the cost of moving in Israel: why a video estimate is more cost-effective than a phone one

You call a company and describe it: “Two-room apartment, fifth floor, closet, two suitcases, sofa.” They quote you a single price. The crew arrives, and they start talking: “Oh, but the closet doesn’t come apart,” “The elevator is narrow,” “There’s also a nightstand, we didn’t account for it.” The final price increases by 30-50%. Sound familiar?

The problem isn’t that you’re being lied to. The problem is that over the phone, you’re both acting blind. You’re not a professional to know which details are important for the appraisal. The manager can’t see your apartment. The result is guesswork, rough estimates, and then surprises on site.

Video appraisals work differently. You grab your phone, turn on WhatsApp, and walk through the rooms. You don’t need to film beautifully—just show what’s coming: open cabinets, appliances, corners, doorways. Sometimes 40-60 seconds is enough. For you, it’s minimal effort. For the company, it’s a realistic picture.

What difference does this make? First, the fixed price. If you’ve shown everything and the contractor confirmed the price, it won’t change on moving day. Even if you forgot to mention a bicycle or a floor vase. Second, time. No need for lengthy descriptions, repeating questions, or clarifying. One video is worth ten minutes of conversation.

In one case, a client from Netanya called and said, “A few things, a couple of boxes.” The video revealed that, in addition to the boxes, there was a piano, which was located in a narrow hallway, and a glass table that needed to be packed in a special way. This would have only surfaced over the phone during loading. As it was, they immediately found a moving van with a ramp, brought film and cardboard, and calculated the time. The move went smoothly.

Of course, a video isn’t a panacea. If you’re unsure of what you’re moving, or are only renting one room, the estimate will be inaccurate. But even an incomplete video is better than saying, “Well, it’s about the same as everyone else.”

Another point: you can watch the video again. The manager won’t miss any details you didn’t mention. And in a phone conversation, small details often slip through the cracks—especially when you’re in a hurry or nervous about moving.

Don’t worry about “not being able to film.” No one expects you to be a cameraman. Just walk slowly through the apartment, lingering on large items, and show whether there’s access to the entrance hall with the elevator. If something wasn’t captured correctly, they’ll gently suggest what to add.

And yes, it’s free. Always. No reputable company charges for understanding the scope of the work. If they ask for payment for an “appraiser’s visit” or a “video consultation,” that’s a reason to reconsider whether it’s worth continuing the conversation.

Bottom line: a video appraisal isn’t a marketing gimmick, but a tool that saves both you and the contractor time, stress, and money. You get a clear estimate before work begins. The company provides a clear understanding of the task. And the move stops being a lottery.

Next time, try demonstrating instead of describing. The difference is noticeable.
